这个短语中 beat是 “敲打，拍打”, bush 是 “灌木丛”，但这个短语现在的意思并不是 “敲打灌木丛”的意思，而是表示一个人说话 “拐弯抹角，东拉西扯，不直奔主题”。据说以前的猎人为了把狼引出，故意用敲打灌木丛--这种“旁敲侧击”的方式，来实现自己的目的。久而久之，beat around the bush就逐渐演变成“兜圈子、绕弯子”的说法方式。
