“the + 形容词”表示一类人，这一点即可认为是定冠词 the 的用法，也可以看作形容词的用法，大家都比较熟悉。但是这个结构作主语的时候，谓语动词的单复数却很讲究。
1. 用作复数：“the + 形容词”如果代表的时候一类人，看作复数，谓语动词自然是复数。
The poor should be helped to stand on their own feet.
应该帮助穷人们自力更生。
The young must study hard to work for their country.
青年应该努力学习以报效祖国。
2. 看作单数的情况：“the + 形容词”如果表示抽象名词，这是单数的。
He is too young to tell the right from the wrong.
他太小，不辨是非。
The good is not always the true.
善并非都真。
单复数取决于其含义，比如：the beautiful 表示“美”就是单数的，表示“美女”就是复数的。the good 表示“好人”是复数，表示“善”就是单数的。
3. 注意一些习惯表达，比如：the sick---病人，我们不说“the ill（×）”
这种结构的所有格，一般用 of 短语表示所属关系，不用‘s 。
the union of the young （√）
the youngs union （×）
