晶体振荡器用石英晶体和有源器件(如晶体管、运算放大器等)构成的正弦波发生器。19由美国W.G.凯地提出。石英晶体具有压电效应，当交流电压加于晶片两端时能产生谐振现象（见石英晶体），所以石英晶体也是一种谐振器，它串联和并联的谐振频率相隔很近。晶体振荡器是用石英晶体谐振器代替LC谐振回路而构成的频率固定的振荡器（见LC 振荡器）。石英晶体谐振器的品质因数很高，所以晶体振荡器的频率稳定度也很高。晶体振荡器广泛用作通信及电子等仪器设备中的信号源。晶体振荡器按晶体在电路中的作用可分为两种类型。一类是并联型晶体振荡器电路（图1）。晶体在电路中等效为电感元件，它与电容器C1、C2组成并联谐振回路，振荡频率在晶体的并联谐振频率附近。另一类是串联型晶体振荡器电路(图2)。电感器L和电容器C1、C2构成一并联谐振回路,兼起分压作用的C1与C2间的抽头经过石英晶体接到晶体管的发射极。在石英晶体的串联谐振频率点，晶体呈现很小的纯电阻，接近短路，正反馈最强，因而产生振荡。并联型晶体振荡器的振荡频率较低（低于20兆赫），而串联型晶体振荡器的振荡频率则较高。为了提高晶体振荡器的振荡频率，可以利用石英晶体的谐波（一般为三次至七次谐波）来产生振荡。用来产生这种振荡波的电路称为泛音晶体振荡器。如要获得低的频率，则须使用多极石英晶体的谐振器来构成晶体振荡器。这种石英晶体是按照特殊的弯曲振动原理产生压电效应的，振荡频率较低，常用于载波机、数传机等通信设备。还有一种用逻辑门电路与石英晶体构成的门晶体振荡器（图3）。门电路提供一定的增益和180°的相移；另外的180°相移由晶体和电容器C1、C2组成的π形网络提供。这样,自激振荡所需的 360°相移就得到满足。随着电路集成化技术的发展，还出现了集成电路晶体振荡器，它由一片多级放大器组件外接石英晶体构成，已广泛用于频率合成器、电视接收机、调制解调器、锁相环及微处理器的时钟电路。石英晶体的电参数随温度变化，影响晶体振荡器的频率稳定度，为了得到更高的频率稳定度，石英晶体应置于恒温设备中。未加恒温设备的晶体振荡器的频率稳定度达到10-5的量级,如加恒温设备后则可高达5×10-8。
