健康教育引导与教育人们养成有益于健康的行为，使之达到最佳健康状态的一种教育过程。健康教育和一般教育一样，关系到人们知识、态度和行为的改变。它指导和教育人们养成并保持有益于健康的生活，合理与科学地利用已有的健康设施；并自觉地参与改善个人和集体健康状况的各种活动。健康指人在躯体、心理和社会适应能力方面都处于自觉良好、活力充沛的一种状态，它不仅要求一个人的机体免于疾病和衰弱，而且要保持躯体、精神和社会适应能力的完美状态。健康是人的基本权利，达到尽可能好的健康水平是人类一项最重要的社会性目标。目的 主要是传播卫生知识、技能，并开展行为、道德教育,增进整个社会人群的健康与自我保健能力。其理论依据和专业技术来源于医学、社会学、教育学、心理学、行为科学、传播学、科学普及学、统计学和美学等学科。特点 它不仅是卫生知识的传播，更重要的是具体指导与实践，通过有计划的学习过程和有计划的社会行动，使受教育者增长卫生知识,信服科学,改变有损于健康的行为；加强人们的自身保健意识和能力。因此，教育内容应该富有思想性、科学性、针对性和趣味性，并能符合当时、当地人民经济负担的可能性。教育者要帮助受教育者摆脱旧习惯、旧观念，学习新思想、新知识，改变不利于健康的行为,养成有利于健康的良好习惯,自觉自愿地维护自身和公众的身心健康。教育的对象从社会、家庭到个人。关键在于使知识和技术转变为人民大众的行为，获得控制与健康有关的疾病、行为、环境的能力。健康教育者不仅是知识的传播者，还应是健康政策的发动者，是个人和集体行动的推动者，是健康资源的挖掘者。种类 健康教育分为学校卫生教育和社会大众健康教育两大部分，后者亦称群众卫生教育。学校卫生教育的目的是指导学生在生长发育过程和日常生活中坚持有利于健康的行为；帮助学生增长知识，启发他们自觉采取有益于健康的言行，并影响其家庭和周围的人。社会大众健康教育的对象则是个体、机构和社会群体。其目的是协助人们或组织人们理解那些影响其个人或公众健康的行为和问题，从而改变他们的习惯和行为，或者设法改变其所处的环境以合乎卫生健康的要求。根据人群的居住环境、职业、年龄、性别等的不同，健康教育又可分为城镇健康教育、青少年健康教育、老年人健康教育、工人的劳动卫生和安全教育、服务性行业的健康教育、公共场所的健康教育、医疗机构中的健康教育、残疾康复的健康教育、疾病防治健康教育、计划生育宣传教育、性教育、心理卫生教育和生活方式的健康教育等。方式和媒体 健康教育的实施方式和媒体很多，如言语教育、文字教育、形象教育、卫生摄影、电化教育、卫生文艺宣传、展览教育、报刊杂志、广播电视等。所用方式因时、因地、因人而异。PRECEDE框架结构是美国健康教育专家 L.W.格林提出的健康教育理论模型。PRECEDE为英文Predisposing，Reinforcing and Enabling Causes in EducationDiagnosis and Evaluation（教育诊断和评价中的促成因素、巩固因素和实现因素）的缩写。用这框架设计教育计划,是从结果分析入手,经过几个连续分析过程进行设计。健康教育的实施方法不断完善。从前只重视单向的大众传播教育方式，现在强调传播与教育并重，以传播与教育手段相结合；重视行为的转变及其效果评价；强调从小抓起,加强学校卫生教育,注意培养良好行为与纠正不卫生习惯相结合，以培养为主。英、美、日本、芬兰、新加坡等国，以及香港和台湾地区实行这种方式的健康教育，已收到显著效果。
