探索性研究一种对生疏的社会现象进行初步了解，从而为今后更周密地研究提供基础的研究类型。当研究者接触一个新的课题，或者研究一类尚无人涉足的社会现象时，往往要进行探索性研究。内容主要包括以下3个方面:①查阅文献。即查找、浏览和阅读与新课题或该现象有关的各种书籍和文献，并对这些资料进行概括和总结。②请教专家。即向那些对该领域感兴趣，并且熟悉情况、掌握第一手材料的人们请教,同他们交谈,向他们征询，借助于专家的研究来增加研究者对所研究课题的认识。③实地考察。即研究者深入实地进行观察和访问，往往是选择一些典型的情况，采用参与观察、非结构性访谈等方式进行。探索性研究有下列一些主要目的：①探索和形成关于研究课题的假设；②发展可用于更为周密的研究的方法；③探讨开展更为周密的研究的可能性。探索性研究的目的不在于全面、准确地描述所研究的现象，也不解释这些现象产生的原因及相互关系，只是为今后的周密研究提供基础和指导。在社会学研究中，它既是不可缺少的一环，同时又存在着难以对研究课题提供完美答案的缺陷。
