学科教学心理学研究学生在学习掌握各门学科过程中的心理特点和规律以及学科内容、教学方法与学生心理发展相互关系的教育心理学分支。有关个别学科的教学心理学研究出现较早，1895年，首见美国J.杜威及J.A.麦克利伦合著的《数之心理及其在算术教学法上之应用》一书，继而，W.F.迪尔伯恩的《阅读心理》(1906)问世。系统地综合各科心理而编辑成书的，最早见于美国C.H.贾德的《中学各科心理学》（1915）和H.B.里德的《小学各科心理学》(1927)。教学过程的成效取决于教师对教材教法的选择以及对学生身体、智力、情绪、精神生活成熟过程的了解,并施以有利的影响，促进这个过程的发展。学科教学心理学其要旨在于造就不仅能适应社会，而且能改造社会的人。每门学科均可根据其特点在为学习者提供知识工具、培养智力和形成个性及习惯方面发挥作用。学科教学心理学是各科教学法的基础。它研究的目的有两个：①用实验心理学的方法，研究各科教学法及学习法，把各执一端的、零散的教学经验和学习经验加以系统化，提高到具有客观规律性的水平；②根据实验的结果和确切的事实立论，评价现行的教本编辑以及教法使用的得失，寻求提高教学效果的最优途径。学科教学心理学研究的范围很广。所有中小学教学计划所列的各门学科,诸如语文、数学、外语、体育、历史、地理、音乐、美术、自然科学以及其他社会科学均包括在内。可以把中小学分开研究，成为"小学各科心理学"和"中学各科心理学"等。也可以对各科分别进行研究，构成其本身独立的学科心理学体系，如语文教学心理学、数学教学心理学、外语教学心理学等。参考书目潘菽主编：《教育心理学》，人民教育出版社，北京，1980。
