氧化铝纤维一种主要成分为氧化铝的多晶质无机纤维，主晶形可呈γ-，δ-，θ-，α-氧化铝,通常它还含有 5％左右的二氧化硅，用以稳定晶相、抑制高温下晶粒的长大。氧化铝纤维导热率、加热收缩率和热容都较低。长期使用温度为1300～1400°C,高于普通硅酸铝纤维(1000～1100°C)。它具有较好的化学稳定性,可在酸性环境、氧化气氛、还原气氛和真空条件下使用，对碱性环境也有一定耐蚀性，但易受铅蒸气和五氧化二钒的侵蚀。这种纤维主要用做钢铁工业各种热处理炉、陶瓷烧成窑、石油化工中的裂解炉、燃烧炉等的隔热炉衬，节能效果显著。对间歇作业的窑炉还能较大幅度地增加产品产量。此外，它可用做化学工业中的催化剂载体，称为氧化铝载体。核反应堆及航天飞机的隔热材料，轻合金的增强材料等，也用这种纤维。由于氧化铝熔点高达2323°C，其熔体粘度低，成纤性差，故无法用熔融法制取氧化铝纤维。目前，主要的工业制法多用先驱物法。典型的制造过程为：①将氧化铝的先驱物（如将铝粉悬浮在某种铝盐水溶液中形成的粘稠浆液）和二氧化硅的先驱物（如硅胶或有机硅烷），以及控制液体流变学性质的有机添加剂，制成胶体溶液。②借助离心喷吹，或喷丝头纺丝加空气流喷吹等成纤手段，将上述胶体溶液制成凝胶状短纤维。③加热干燥。④高温烧成，去除有机物，使两种先驱物分别转变成氧化铝和二氧化硅，同时生成晶体结构。氧化铝纤维成本很高，为此常把它和普通硅酸铝纤维按不同比例混合，制成板，毡等制品以适应不同用途和强度的需要。
